Indira Canal in Lucknow to get a facelift soon; citizens to get a new hangout spot!

New saplings will also be planted along the banks, which would help in boosting the groundwater levels.

Lucknow administration has decided to implement a beautification project for upgrading the structure and surroundings of the Indira Canal. Under this initiative, the canal will be beautified with the help of multiple activities along both banks. Taking the plans further, SDM Mohanlalganj Shubhi Kakan has prepared a framework for their project. While the slopes of the canal will be paved with stones, the roads lining it expect a massive green revamp.

Bringing forth a new experience for the city dwellers!

A stretch of 15 km from the district jail to the end of Mohanlalganj, lining the bank of Indira Canal will be beautified under this scheme. This would include the lengths of Nagram and Kisan Path. Later, the scope of the work will be increased to cover a length of 25 km. As per the plans, the Forest Department will plant trees as high as 8 feet while the Irrigation Department will undertake works for laying the safety nets and stones.

This upcoming development work will be implemented with the help of low-cost interventions. Lakhs of good-quality saplings will be planted along the banks, which would help in boosting the groundwater levels. Once ready, the revamped locales of the Indira Canal will ensure a brand new experience for the city dwellers.

Canal beautification project to serve a 3-fold purpose

In addition to this, the administration has started an exercise to protect the fields around the canal from unchecked human activities. Locals have raised complaints regarding excessive clogging around both the banks of the canal, which hampers harvesting in the fields especially during heavy monsoons.

It has been observed that people from other districts lay nets for conducting fishing activities illegally. They leave the old nets in the canal itself, which severely affects the flow of water. Further, the place is often frequented by robbers and other miscreants owing to darkness and isolation. Now, the planned project will serve a three-fold purpose. While the canal will be beautified, the efforts would also help in curbing illegal and criminal activities in the region.
