Although pitched as a game-changer for daily commuters between Lucknow and Kanpur, the much-anticipated Lucknow-Kanpur Expressway has missed multiple deadlines over the past year. Now, with construction in its final leg, officials suggest the wait may finally be nearing its end. Stretching around 63 km, the expressway is over 95% complete, with only finishing touches, safety checks, and trial runs left before it opens to the public. The project, initially slated for a December 2025 launch and later pushed to March 2026, is now expected to become operational by late April or May 2026.
Delays were largely attributed to the relocation of high-tension power lines and pending work on a few critical stretches near Lucknow. In addition, installation of surveillance systems, signage, and other smart road infrastructure took longer than anticipated. Once opened, the expressway is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to under 45 minutes, significantly easing congestion on the existing highway.
While an exact inauguration date is yet to be officially announced, the project appears to be in its final countdown; this time, for real.
