Standing true to its title of being the ‘First CCTV City in India’, Lucknow is all set to get new closed-circuit cameras to promote transparent operations in police stations. Around 600 CCTVs will be installed at 40 police stations of the Lucknow Police Commissionerate to keep strict vigil here. As per reports, this decision is part of the bigger plan, under which surveillance cameras will be set up at 1753 police stations, across various districts in UP.

The Uttar Pradesh administration has constituted a State Level Oversight Committee to ensure the arrangement of a bolstered CCTV security across all districts here. The programme has been designed to amp up the surveillance network of the state and equip each police station with about 15 cameras, instead of the present 4. The ₹300-crore project will extend for 3 years, where only ₹100 crores of the budget will be released annually.
The proposed cameras will have 18 months of DVR capacity, which will also record camera audio. The cameras installed as of now neither keep a DVR record nor capture audio, added reports. These advanced features will solve all complaints related to any ill-behaviour of the police with the common man, making them feel safer. Proper surveillance at the police stations will ensure safe and honest proceedings.
CCTV system of surveillance to kickstart by November

The CCTV upgrade scheme is pegged to thoroughly cover all premises of the police station and ensure round-the-clock surveillance. This step will make the police personnel accountable and even help in cutting down on several corrupt practices. All cameras will be linked to the police headquarters in Lucknow, where officials will be able to keep a track of all activities, via direct online footage.
The work of the installation of CCTV cameras is expected to start soon after the District Level Oversight Committee submits their reports to the state. As informed by sources, the system of surveillance of high tech cameras will kickstart operations all districts by November this year.
