We celebrated women throughout the globe for the International Women’s Day just went by and it brought to light issues of gender equality, of women’s rights, of their brushed off contributions, of their day-to-to life struggles, and so on.
The achievements by awe-inspiring women in the fields of education, healthcare, hospitality, fashion, etc, are galore and are in the process of being penned and revered. In medicine, for instance, women have tirelessly served and keeping serving as doctors and nurses, as scientists and other staff. But today, we take into account the selfless contributions of certain unsung heroes in the medical world — women organ donors —and talk about what they’ve accomplished.
In conversation with a senior surgeon about women organ donors
According to stats in 2020, 78% of organ donors in India were women. As per another report, women are more likely to be organ donors, owing to their vulnerable and subtle sides.
Professor Dr Tom Cherian, senior liver specialist and transplant surgeon, spoke about the concept, “More recently, police officers, sportswomen, women soldiers are all slowly beginning to be recognised for their contributions, but we see every day a peculiar hero — a lady organ donor. I feel for these women… for many reasons.”
He continued further, “The stress of being a donor, watching a loved one critically ill, and managing the various formalities that go with such a complex operation, from certifications to finances. It is this unthinkable scenario that these ladies must face which makes me call them the REAL heroes who deserve our respect and utmost gratitude.”
“An affectionate ‘thank you for all you do’ to all women on women’s day,” he concluded.
Majority of Indian donors are women, says study
According to an analysis carried out by a hospital in Mumbai, 7 out of 10 organ donors were women. And diving deeper, wives and mothers formed the major part of the living organ donor pool. The numbers that the institution had accounted to some 68% of donors who were females.
These unrecognised donors, who arrive to these hospitals as if in the guise of paragons sent as blessing, happily donate a portion of their liver for their loved ones, a kidney without a second thought, and still remain nameless. And that’s not even the craziest part. These women do all of this, and more, while being the sole caretakers of their families and while going through personal crises and that is something that one could appreciate every now and then.
