India Meteorological Department: Overview
Meteorology in India dates back to ancient times, with early references in philosophical texts like the Upanishads, which discussed cloud formation and seasonal cycles. Landmark works such as Varahamihira’s Brihatsamhita and Kautilya’s Arthashastra highlight the deep understanding of atmospheric processes and rainfall patterns.
From the early meteorological observatories set up by the British East India Company to IMD’s advancements in weather forecasting technology, the department has continually contributed to scientific progress. IMD’s journey, from telegraph-based warnings to pioneering satellite weather monitoring, underscores its vital role in modern meteorology and disaster preparedness in India.
