Mumbai Police intensify security at religious spots; conducts mock drill at Crawford Market
Security measures in Mumbai have been intensified following an alert from the Intelligence Bureau regarding a potential terror threat, particularly in high-footfall places. In response to this, Mumbai Police has been instructed to conduct mock drills in crowded areas and religious sites. A senior police officer informed the Times of India that all Deputy Commissioners of police are closely monitoring security in their respective jurisdictions.
On Friday, heavy police was deployed in the Crawford Market area, where security drills were also carried out. Meanwhile, security arrangements were reviewed in Chembur and Matunga, where a temple was temporarily closed for devotees following a police inspection in the morning.
Reportedly, when questioned about the increased police presence, officials explained that it was a precautionary measure in light of the forthcoming festivals and legislative assembly elections. The alert comes at a time when Mumbai is gearing up to celebrate festivals like Durga Puja, Dussehra and Diwali The polls for the 288-member Maharashtra state assembly are also around the corner.
