To boost ridership on its underused Aqua Metro line and improve tourism access, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) is planning a 3-km ropeway, connecting Aarey Metro Station to Film City and potentially Sanjay Gandhi National Park. The project aims to solve last-mile connectivity issues in the congested Goregaon-Mulund corridor while minimising ecological impact.
Expected to carry 2,000-3,000 passengers hourly, the ropeway will use eco-friendly gondola technology (mono/bi/tri-cable) and be developed via public-private partnership. This comes as the partially operational Aqua line struggles with just 52,600 daily riders, far below capacity despite heavy rain-driven spikes.
The full 33.5-km Metro 3 line to Cuffe Parade will open within a month, with the ropeway planned as a multimodal complement to decongest roads and serve Film City’s workforce and tourists.
