Mumbai's weather took a dramatic twist on Wednesday, registering its hottest December day in 16 years as temperatures soared to 37.3°C—nearly 4°C above the seasonal average. The sharp rise came on the heels of the city’s coldest November day in eight years, when temperatures had plunged to a chilly 16°C.

The Santacruz observatory recorded the sweltering peak, while Colaba observatory logged a slightly cooler 35°C.

Winter-like weather expected to return after Dec 7

Meteorological experts attribute the unusual weather to strong easterly winds and moisture from Cyclone Fengal, which delayed the sea breeze and contributed to the heat. The Santacruz Observatory noted the temperature was nearly 4 degrees above normal, marking a significant deviation from typical December weather patterns.

Adding to this, the city also witnessed unseasonal light drizzle in early morning hours, with pockets like Juhu and Bandra experiencing unexpected rainfall. The night offered no respite, with minimum temperatures remaining high at 25.5 degrees – the warmest December night since 2022.

The India Meteorological Department predicts continued warm temperatures for the next 3-4 days, with winter-like conditions expected to return after December 7.

Meanwhile, the city's air quality has also deteriorated, registering an overall AQI of 139, categorised as moderate. The unexpected heatwave has left Mumbaikars eagerly awaiting the return of the winter chill.
