Mumbai residents woke up to a surprisingly breezy Thursday morning, but don’t be fooled, the city remains under a Yellow Alert as a scorching heatwave grips Maharashtra. The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai and several surrounding districts including Thane, Palghar, and Raigad, warning of hot and humid conditions expected to persist for the next few days.
Mumbai braces for prolonged heatwave conditions
On April 11, Mumbai is expected to see partly cloudy skies, with temperatures hovering between 27°C and 32°C. While no rainfall is forecast for the city, parts of Vidarbha may witness thunderstorms and gusty winds, according to the IMD.
The city’s growing microclimate variations are becoming increasingly noticeable. Earlier this month, Vasai West recorded a sweltering 33.5°C, while Powai remained a relatively cool 20.4°C, highlighting a dramatic 13°C difference within the city itself.
With humidity levels peaking at 52%, the heat feels even more oppressive. Health officials have issued advisories, particularly for young children and the elderly, as Maharashtra has already recorded 32 cases of heatstroke this season. Experts recommend avoiding outdoor activities between 12 PM and 4 PM, consuming hydrating foods like fruits and curd, and using curtains or window shades to keep indoor temperatures down.
As Chief Minister raises concerns over the growing risks of climate change, it’s clear that Mumbaikars need to prepare for a relentless and intense summer ahead.
