Mumbai is set to introduce India’s first pod taxi system, aimed at improving last-mile connectivity between Kurla and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The Automated Rapid Transit System will be implemented by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) and developed in phases across an 8.85-kilometre corridor. The First Phase will cover a 3.36-kilometre stretch between Bandra East and Kurla, connecting points such as LBS Marg and Kalanagar.

The system will feature driverless, battery-powered pods running on elevated tracks, each accommodating up to six passengers and operating at speeds of up to 40 km/h. Air-conditioned stations will be built at intervals of around 200 metres, with pods arriving every 15 seconds. The ₹1,017 crore project will also integrate with Mumbai’s metro network, connecting with Metro Line 3 at BKC and Metro Line 2B at key points. A depot in Bandra East will support operations and maintenance.
Being developed under a Public-Private Partnership model, the project is expected to ease congestion and reduce travel time. Officials estimate that by 2031, the system could serve over 1.09 lakh passengers daily, marking a significant step in Mumbai’s evolving infrastructure.
