Well-known for his empathy towards stray dogs, 86-year-old Ratan Tata is about to inaugurate his newest ‘pet project’ – a state-of-the-art animal hospital in Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi area. This eagerly anticipated initiative, which is based on his personal quest to obtain world-class medical care for his injured pet, is set to launch during the first week of March.
Spanning 2.2 acres and constructed at a cost of ₹165 crores, the Tata Trusts Small Animal Hospital aka the ‘pet project’ will be among the rare 24×7 facilities in India, catering to dogs, cats, rabbits, and other small animals. This new infirmary is also being termed as one of ‘India’s largest animal hospital’.
A comprehensive care for small animals
Originally slated for Navi Mumbai, the location of the pet hospital was later reconsidered to ensure accessibility for pet owners. The project, announced in 2017, faced delays due to logistical challenges in acquiring suitable land and obtaining permissions.
Nevertheless, after meticulous planning and partnerships with five UK veterinary schools, including the Royal Veterinary College London, the hospital is primed to provide comprehensive care. Led by British veterinarian Thomas Heathcote, the ground-plus-four-storey facility will boast a capacity to house 200 patients, offering surgical, diagnostic, pharmacy, and multidisciplinary services.
