Back in 2017, when I returned from my short trip from Mumbai a day before Anant Chaturdashi, the streets of Lucknow were chanting “Morya Re, Bappa Morya”. This was the first time when I witnessed the city’s ‘Ganpati Fervour’ while simultaneously being stuck in a small traffic jam over Gomti River’s bridge owing to visarjan.
Still vivid in my recollection, shortly I wrote an article (which I was unable to find for backlinking, yeah :/) too, asking Bappa to return soon.
In essence, Ganesh Chaturthi, though a relatively growing tradition in Lucknow, has found a special place in the hearts of many in the neighbourhood, year after year. This year, the festival’s charm doesn’t lie in grand spectacles, but in the heartfelt celebrations that echo in the streets and homes of Lucknowites.
A humble abode for Bappa
Tucked away at the rear entry of Hazratganj Parking, a modest pandal welcomes Ganpati Bappa. It’s here, amidst the simplicity of this space, that the true essence of the festival unfolds—devotion and unity. As communities gather to chant “Ganpati Bappa Morya,” their voices resonate with a deep-seated faith.
Small pandals, big celebrations
While larger pandals like Manautiyon Ke Raja at Jhulelal Park continue to draw crowds, it’s the smaller, more intimate celebrations that truly capture the spirit of Ganesh Chaturthi. These gatherings, where families and friends come together to honour Bappa, are a testament to the enduring power of tradition.
A realm of spiritual bliss
As Hazratganj echoes with the joyous strains of “Shendur Lal Chadhayo“, it’s evident that Ganesh Chaturthi is becoming an integral part of Lucknow’s evolving culture. The lyrics of these devotional songs, filled with love and reverence, transport us to a realm of spiritual bliss.
This year, explore the lesser-known pandals in the City of Nawabs, where the festival’s spirit shines brightest. Visit these spots, chant along with “Mourya Re”, and support the local organisers who are fostering Ganpati Utsav in Lucknow.
