The Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is set to redesign Charak Chauraha, one of the city’s busiest intersections, in a bid to end chronic traffic jams. The existing rotary has been identified as the primary cause of gridlock, with vehicles clogging from all sides during peak hours. Municipal Commissioner has directed officials to introduce safe crossing pathways at the junction. The move is crucial as thousands of patients and attendants from King George’s Medical University (KGMU), along with local residents, cross the stretch on foot daily.
Action plan for infrastructure upgrade
Superintending Engineer J. P. Mishra has been tasked with drafting a new design, suited to present-day traffic needs. Meanwhile, the Bridge Corporation has been instructed to prepare a detailed plan for covering the open drain at the site. This will prevent spillage, improve cleanliness, and reduce obstructions for vehicles.
On-ground Inspection and Immediate Orders
The Municipal Commissioner, accompanied by senior engineers and traffic police officials, inspected the site earlier this week. The team assessed current bottlenecks and emphasised the need for modern solutions. Orders were also issued for immediate debris clearance, with officials noting that accumulated waste not only hinders movement but also poses safety risks to pedestrians.
