Travellers, take note! Mumbai’s second international airport, the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), is on track for its inauguration by the end of this month. The airport, which is designed to ease the growing air travel demand in the region, will serve as Mumbai’s second international airport, alongside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA).
New code, flights, and airline operations
The key detail for passengers is the airport code, NMIA will carry the IATA code ‘NMI,’ while CSMIA continues with ‘BOM.’ The airport’s ICAO code is ‘VANM.’ So, when booking flights, passengers should double-check their departure airport to avoid confusion, especially as NMIA starts its operations.

Major carriers such as IndiGo and Akasa Air are set to lead operations at NMIA. IndiGo will kick off with 18 daily flights connecting over 15 domestic cities, with plans for rapid expansion, including international routes by 2026. Meanwhile, Akasa Air, in partnership with AdAirport Holdings Ltd., will start with 100 weekly domestic flights, aiming to scale up to over 300 domestic and 50 international departures weekly. This growth reflects the airport’s potential to become a key travel hub in the region.

For travellers heading to NMIA, the airport offers excellent connectivity options, including highways, rail links, and express buses, ensuring easy access from Mumbai and surrounding areas. Key routes like the Sion-Panvel Highway and the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu) will significantly reduce travel time, while the Panvel Railway Station provides a convenient option for train passengers. Additionally, dedicated airport express buses are being planned to enhance connectivity.
Travellers are advised to arrive at least two hours before their domestic flight and keep essential documents like IDs and boarding passes handy.
