In a bid to upgrade road safety and prevent accidents in the city, Lucknow’s Kamta, Chinhat and Matiyari flyovers will be equipped with street lights by November. Lying on the Lucknow-Ayodhya road, the three flyovers will get around 400 poles on a stretch of 5Km, approximately. A joint venture of NHAI, Lucknow Municipal Corporation and Public Works Department, the project will be implemented at a proposed cost of ₹4 crores.

Stepping ahead with the plans, National Highways Authority of India has sent a proposal of Rs. 4 crores to the central government. Now, the approved budget cost is awaited and the installation process will be fast-tracked thereafter.
In July, the Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court had passed a judgement to install street lights on the three flyovers- Kamta, Chinhat and Matiyari to strengthen road safety. These orders were given in response to the PIL filed by Lok Nyayarath Sansthan, which highlighted the need for street lights. Therein, the judges warned that any delay in installation process would lead to serious consequences. Post that, the bench had follow-up hearings to assess the state of the scheme.

Due to the lack of street lights on the 3 flyovers, the commuters face multiple problems and accidents have become a common occurrence. Speaking about the slated plans, the NHAI Project Director, N.N. Giri mentioned that Kamta, Chinhat and Matiyari flyovers are positioned within the urban limits. The installation of street lights will enhance the ease and safety for the frequent travellers.
Considering its importance for the public, all stakeholders will ensure that the interventions are executed in a rapid and streamlined way. It is expected that the construction work will begin after a week, once the final budgetary allotments are approved. Given the amplified problems during the winters, the authorities are trying to complete this project at the earliest.
