Taking its cleanliness drive up by a notch, the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) is now planning to upgrade its existing waste segregation into 35 different categories. As of now, with the help of the automated Material Recovery Facility (MRF) set up at Devguradia trenching ground, the dry waste is segregated into 12 different categories. Reportedly, this facility was established at a cost of about ₹20 crores.
Automated MRF plants treat about 500 tonnes of dry waste everyday

In a bid to improve the quality of the recycling of dry waste across the city, the IMC has directed the concerned agency to install a secondary segregation unit to add on the existing MRF facility. According to the officials, the automated MRF plant set up on viability gap funding (VGF) model has the capacity to treat 500 tonnes of dry waste every day. Operating since 2019, while this plant works at 60% capacity at present, it will be used at its full capacity from now onwards.
This includes segregation of plastic waste into five categories, namely- transparent plastic, coloured plastic, single use plastic and mix low density plastic like oil packets. Moreover, plastic waste bottles of shampoo and soaps that are of high density will also be segregated. Meanwhile, the paper waste will be segregated into three categories including mix paper, cardboard along with mix plastic paper. Additionally, metal waste will be segregated into cans, foil and bangles at the automated plant.
Notably, by achieving the historic feat of being the cleanliest city in India for the fifth time in a row, Indore hasn’t just made a name for itself but also earns revenue from its waste management system. According to the officials, the civic body of Indore earns around ₹8 crore every year through waste processing.
