After the earthen diyas garnered a positive response during Diwali, now the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) is prepping to develop flower pots out of cow dung obtained from the Kanha Upvan animal shelter in Lucknow. A.K. Rao, Director, Animal Welfare, mentioned that during Diwali season they had sold about two lakh diyas and based on the positive feedback, the authorities are working to make flower pots from cow dung. As per claims, a few NGOs have already shown interest in the product.
Dung pots would be completely biodegradable
The cow dung pots would be made of ingredients including wheat stubble, wood powder and mud and to give it a smooth texture, refined flour would be used as well. Since these dung pots are a sustainable alternative of plastic, they will be completely biodegradable and would provide nutrition to the plants grown in them.
In fact, the cow pots decompose to provide the necessary nutrients for plants such as nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium so they can be used as manure once broken down. The Kanha Upvan in Lucknow has about 10,000 abandoned cows and use of cow dung in other products would generate funds for the maintenance of the animal shelter.
