A trip down the history lane
During the reign of Maratha Chief Chhatrapati Shivaji, Vengurla was home to the busiest trading centre. This rich mercantile past of this town is marked today by the existence of Vengurla Jetty, huge warehouses and the ruins of a seventeenth-century Dutch factory, among other places.
Moreover, it is believed that during that between the seventeenth and nineteenth century, Vengurla was twice burnt to the ground. This is the reason why the Vengurla rocks, whose etchings bear testimony to the fire attacks, are popularly referred to as Burnt Island which used to be. Once an important navigation point for sea explorers, today this island is a breeding ground for the rare Indian Swiftlet.
