This World Vegan Month (November), PETA India has honoured Ahmedabad as India’s ‘Most Vegan-Friendly City’ of 2024. The city received this recognition for its growing vegan community, diverse plant-based food options, and the supportive environment fostering veganism.
PETA India presented the certificate to Ahmedabad’s Mayor, acknowledging the city’s contributions to vegan living. Veganism, which avoids all animal-derived ingredients, aligns well with much of Gujarat’s vegetarian cuisine. With simple adjustments like excluding ghee, curd, or paneer, many local dishes can be easily transformed into vegan-friendly meals.
Fostering vegan food options, cruelty-free fashion, and more
PETA India highlighted the city’s impressive range of vegan dining options. Notable eateries include The Vegan Kitchen, which offers a variety of both Indian and global plant-based dishes, and Satvegan Cafe, known for its wholesome and nutritious meals. Additionally, Ahmedabad is home to several innovative vegan cloud kitchens, such as Killos, which specialises in vegan Indian sweets, Jaco’s Vegan Hangout, a hotspot for plant-powered pizzas, and Yummvgo, which serves all-natural treats like popsicles and cookies.
But Ahmedabad’s vegan influence doesn’t stop at food. The city is also a hub for vegan fashion and beauty. Designer Purvi Doshi creates cruelty-free, handcrafted clothing, while Renee Cosmetics, a vegan beauty brand by Aaksha Goradia, is PETA-certified. Influencer Style Destino by Shruti Jain advocates for sustainable fashion choices, further promoting a cruelty-free lifestyle.
The city also hosted the Ahimsa Vegan Festival 2023, celebrating plant-based living and non-violence, and the Vegans of Gujarat online community connects local vegans with resources, shared experiences, and events.
Through its diverse vegan options, ethical businesses, and commitment to sustainability, Ahmedabad is setting a powerful example for cities nationwide, proving that vegan living can be both accessible and enjoyable.
