Nestled near the Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary, Mahadev Temple at Tambdi Surla, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is situated almost 65 km away from Panjim. Touted as Goa’s oldest temple, the ceiling of this edifice is decorated with lotus engravings carved in basalt stone. Full of beautiful architectural nuances, this place of worship is believed to have been built in the 12th century and it really comes alive during the Mahashivarati celebrations. A reminder of the Kadamba dynasty that once ruled Goa, Mahadev Temple should definitely find a place on your travel itinerary if you share our love of all things vintage!
Located at the foot of Anmod Ghat
Built in Jain style almost a thousand years ago, the temple is located at the foot of Anmod Ghat and its architectural plan includes an inner sanctum (garbhagriha), intermediate space (antarala) and a pillared hall (sabha mandap) for performing rituals. This small yet perfectly proportional black basalt structure consists of a headless statue of Nandi, situated in the sabha mandap.
Further, the panels on the side of the temple are graced by bas-relief figures of the Hindu holy trinity- Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh, along with their respective consorts. The intricate architectural patterns, such as that of a lotus on the mandap ceiling and other similar engravings, further magnify the timeless beauty of this structure.
