After years of delays due to land disputes and legal hurdles, Union Minister has announced that the long-awaited Mumbai-Goa Highway will be fully operational by June 2025. The project, once completed, is expected to drastically cut travel time between the two coastal hubs and boost connectivity in the Konkan region.
Faster roads, smarter tolls incoming
Speaking at an event in Mumbai on Monday, he acknowledged the numerous challenges that have plagued the project. He explained that the project had faced numerous setbacks, including familial disputes, legal battles, and complications related to land compensation. However, he assured that these issues have now been resolved and the construction work has picked up pace.
The highway, considered one of the “black spots” in the department, is expected to significantly reduce travel time and boost development throughout the Konkan region.
During the same announcement, Gadkari revealed plans to revolutionise India’s toll collection system. He mentioned that a new toll policy would be announced within the next 15 days, highlighting a satellite-based system that would use number plate recognition for automatic bank deductions, thereby eliminating the need for physical toll booths across the country.
Looking ahead, the minister expressed confidence, saying that in the next two years, India’s road infrastructure will be better than that of the United States.
