In a bid to better the air quality of Indore and advance its ‘cleanest Indian city’ identity, the state of Madhya Pradesh has set the ball rolling for a green initiative. On Sunday, the administration and several social welfare groups launched a plantation drive, by the name ‘a plant in every house’, to sow at least 2 lakh plants in Indore by Independence Day. Reportedly, the mission will be backed by the assistive support of the Indore Municipal Corporation and Border Security Force here.

The concept of the plantation programme in Indore was introduced by a launch event, where people involved in environment protection or betterment were felicitated, as well. Legislative representatives present at the launch event highlighted Indore’s status as the pioneer protector of the environment and the city’s global ranking in the clean air programme is a testament to that.
Reportedly, the Commissioner of Indore Municipal Corporation and BSF jawans planted at least 1,000 saplings here to set the ground for the initiative. The IMC Commissioner further elaborated that oxygen-rich plants such as tulsi, aloe vera, money plant, among others, will be planted in houses with little space while those with an adequate area, will get fruit-bearing trees.
Besides the agencies of the government, defence and civic setup, DRP, media personnel, social workers and businessmen, will work together to make the initiative a success. Saplings will also be planted at police stations, BSF camps, markets, central dividers, along with schools and public toilets as well. The list further includes areas close to public toilets, rivers and drains.
In another strategic move, the city’s municipal corporation is also giving plants to the Indore Airport, Nehru Park, Maghdoot Garden, and other regional parks. These saplings and trees will be specifically planted at air pollution hotspots, read reports.
