India’s Nightingale, melody queen Lata Mangeshkar breathed her last on February 6, marking the end of an iconic musical era with her. But as they say, legends don’t die, ‘Didi’s’ voice shall also echo, in our hearts and playlists for generations to come.
In the same strive, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to set up a music academy in honour of Lata Mangeshkar and immortalise her contributions to the music industry. Reportedly, the academy will be established at the singer’s birthplace Indore, in addition to a museum, statue and college.

A memorial service was held in Bhopal on Monday, where Chief Minster planted a tree as an ode to the late singer. “Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore and had a deep connection with Madhya Pradesh. A music academy will be set up in the name of Lata Mangeshkar, where children will get an education in music.” the MP Chief Minister said in an official statement here.
“She (Lata Mangeshkar) is the daughter of Madhya Pradesh and we all are proud of her. She will always remain amid us with her melodious songs. The Madhya Pradesh government has decided to set up a college after Lata Mangeshkar, besides a museum and a musical academy in her birthplace in Indore.”, the CM added. The service was reportedly attended by the prestigious artists and singers in the city.

The CM expressed grief at the demise of the revered singer and announced that from now on, a state award will be given to artists and singers on her birthday, September 28, each year.
The tweet read, “Lata ji wasn’t just the light of the world, but a reason of patriotism that inspired the whole nation. Lata Mangeshkar award will be given on her birthdays”. In a previous tweet, the CM had also shared that a statue will also be erected in the memory of Lata Mangeshkar.
The 92-year-old, timeless voice of India was announced dead after multiple organ failures in a Mumbai hospital on Sunday. Her funeral was held in Mumbai where many celebrities, including the Prime Minister, paid their respects. She was cremated at Shivaji Park shortly after.
