To operationalize the agreement inked between the Lucknow District Administration and IIM Indore back in July, a current initiative is underway.
A team of experts is actively engaged in a study with the aim of exploring avenues to transform Lucknow’s renowned Chikankari craft into a global commodity within the ‘One District One Product’ (ODOP) scheme. The study’s findings are anticipated to be unveiled by the year’s end.

Over the weekend, Lucknow District Magistrate Surya Pal Gangwar visited a training center in Sarojini Nagar to review the progress of the MoU signed in July. Prof Bhavani Shankar and Naveen K Rai from IIM Indore accompanied the team. During the visit, the District Magistrate was briefed on IIM Indore’s ongoing efforts, including discussions and visits to Chikankari units and associated stakeholders over the past week.
Gangwar emphasized the government’s commitment to rejuvenating the local craft under the ODOP scheme, particularly the Chikankari tradition in Lucknow. Their partnership with IIM Indore aims to elevate it to a global standard, enhancing artisans’ incomes.
Preliminary findings from the experts have identified a five-point agenda for focused training to expand the product’s reach and boost artisans’ earnings in this fading art form. Himanshu Rai, Director of IIM Indore, stated that they are currently conducting a comprehensive study and plan to present the report to the administration in December.
