Mumbai woke up to cloudy skies and scattered showers on Tuesday, 26 August, as the monsoon’s grip showed no signs of easing. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for the Konkan region over the next 5 days, warning of heavy rainfall at isolated places in Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad and Ratnagiri. The alert has also been extended to the interiors of Maharashtra, covering parts of Marathwada, North Maharashtra and the Vidarbha region, where moderate to heavy spells are expected.

The wet spell that began on 25 August brought intense downpours, waterlogging, overflowing drains, traffic snarls, and minor train delays across several low‑lying and commercial stretches of Mumbai. By Tuesday morning, overcast skies and intermittent showers signalled that relief remained elusive. Commuters faced delays on arterial roads, while BEST buses and suburban trains reported service disruptions.
The situation was compounded by high-tide activity, which hampered drainage and prolonged waterlogging. According to data, the first high tide occurred at 1:32 AM (4.02 m), followed by low tide at 7:28 AM (0.97 m). The second high tide today is set to take place at 1:44 PM (4.33 m), followed by the evening low tide at 7:58 PM (0.88 m).
Keep umbrellas, raincoats and patience handy
With the city’s trains and flights facing delays, traffic congestion worsening, and high tide activity coinciding with rain spells, Mumbaikars will need to rely on umbrellas, raincoats and patience in the days ahead. Adding to the rush, the Ganesh Chaturthi festivities begin tomorrow, which means the city will witness large crowds, processions and extra traffic alongside the monsoon downpours. Residents are advised to plan travel carefully and stay alert to both weather updates and festival-related diversions.
