In a welcome move for Mumbai’s harried commuters, the Maharashtra government has announced the relocation of the perennially congested Dahisar Toll Plaza. The toll plaza, a major bottleneck at the city’s entry near Mira-Bhayandar, will be relocated two kilometres ahead to the Versova bridge by Diwali. This move is expected to ease traffic jams and reduce fuel wastage.
A step towards easing traffic and tackling pollution
This decision comes after growing concerns over the daily delays of up to 60 minutes faced by residents and travellers, impacting over 1.5 million people. The toll has also been a major source of environmental pollution in the area.
The relocation was approved in a meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister, with key figures like Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik and Dahisar MLA Prakash Surve in attendance. Sarnaik emphasised that the move aligns with the government’s broader efforts to ease congestion, including previous toll exemptions for smaller vehicles. Once approved by the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the relocation is expected to be completed within 1 to 1.5 months, just in time for the festive season.
