South Bombay on a budget: 9 things that prove ₹500 is enough

A pocket-friendly guide to doing SoBo right

Let us not kid ourselves. South Bombay has a way of making ₹500 feel like loose change. One glance at a menu and you are already questioning your life choices. But here is the twist. With a bit of clever planning, that same ₹500 can still buy you a fair bit of fun. A sea-facing coffee, a museum that surprises you, and some rather brilliant street finds. South Bombay, or SoBo as we like to call it, is sometimes simply about spending smart. So here are 9 things you can do in South Bombay under ₹500.

Colaba Causeway, where bargaining is a sport

At Colaba Causeway, ₹500 can go a long way if you have the gift of the gab. Think oxidised jewellery, scarves, sunglasses, tote bags and so much more. You might walk away with a tote or a pair of earrings, but more importantly, an ego boost after winning a bargain. And that, frankly, is priceless.
When: 10:30 am to 1 pm
Where: Chincholi Bunder Road, Ram Nagar, Malad West

National Museum of Indian Cinema (NMIC)

The National Museum of Indian Cinema is a pleasant surprise. Tickets are ₹165 for adults and ₹40 for children. It walks you through the journey of Indian cinema, from Dadasaheb Phalke to modern-day films, with vintage cameras, posters, and interactive exhibits.
When: Tuesday to Sunday | 10 am to 6 pm
Where: 24, Dr Gopalrao Deshmukh Marg, IT Colony, Cumballa Hill

Crawford Market’s Pinterest dreams

Step into Crawford Market and you will find crockery that looks straight out of a mood board. Quirky mugs, pastel plates, charming bowls, all under ₹500. You may not need them, but then again, when has that ever stopped anyone?
When: 11 am to 9 pm
Where: Lokmanya Tilak Road, Dhobi Talao, Fort Area

Pedal your way to peace

Cycling along the Worli seafront is a simple pleasure done right. Rentals range between ₹200 and ₹500 near the promenade. Book ahead with Velocrush India and ride past the sea as the city hums in the background. Early mornings and late evenings are when it truly shines.

Where: Worli Promenade

Tourist for a day

The SoBo’s Hop-On Hop-Off (HOHO) Bus lets you play tourist for a day. For ₹250 to ₹500, you get a breezy two-hour tour covering South Mumbai landmarks starting from points like the Museum (CSMT area) or Gateway of India. Sometimes, seeing your city with fresh eyes is worth every rupee.

A walk through cricketing glory

Step into the Wankhede Stadium with the MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum tour, priced at ₹500. From moments like the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final to memorabilia of legends, the museum captures the spirit of Indian cricket in all its glory. Jerseys, bats, photographs, and behind-the-scenes access to the stadium make it more than just a visit.
When: 11 am to 6 pm
Where: Vinoo Mankad Gate, Wankhede Stadium, Churchgate

Ice cream therapy at Marine Drive

Pick up a sandwich ice cream from K. Rustom & Co. for about ₹150 for two, then walk over to Marine Drive. Sit by the Queen’s Necklace and watch the waves. Sometimes, the simplest plans turn out to be the most memorable.
Where: Brabourne Stadium 86, Veer Nariman Road, Churchgate

A date with the cosmos

Step into Nehru Planetarium where stars, planets, and galaxies come alive through immersive sky shows. Expect storytelling, a touch of science, and visuals that make you forget the city outside. Tickets are priced at ₹150.

Where: Byculla, Mahalakshmi, Mumbai Central, Dadar

Bonus: Fashion Street frenzy

If you still have some change left, Fashion Street can be your final stop. Clothes at throwaway prices, chaos in the air, and a decent chance you will find something unexpectedly brilliant.
Where: New Marine Lines, Churchgate
