In a landmark move for global education, the University of Western Australia (UWA) has formally applied to the University Grants Commission (UGC) to establish branch campuses across the country. If approved, UWA ranked among the world’s top 100 universities, will become the first of Australia’s elite Group of Eight (Go8) institutions to set up in India, with Mumbai as its main hub.
The announcement came during high level talks at the WAVES Summit in Mumbai, where UWA Chancellor Dian Smith-Gander met Indian Prime Minister and Maharashtra Chief Minister. Smith-Gander highlighted UWA’s existing ties with India in agriculture and business, aligning with the national education Policy (NEP) 2020.
UWA plans to offer STEM, Business, and Creative Arts programs, including its renowned Conservatorium of Music. Additional campuses in Tamil Nadu are also envisioned. With Indian higher education poised for rapid growth, UWA’s entry promises global exposure and flexible study pathways for students.
