The Mumbai Coastal Road Project (MCRP) has taken a significant step forward, as construction efforts to connect the Worli end of the Coastal Road with the Bandra-Worli Sea Link have commenced. The latest update reveals that the civic body has successfully placed two out of four girders on the southbound arm, marking progress towards the completion of this crucial link.
Eight girders in total to bridge the gap
Officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have disclosed that the launching of the girder began in February and the remaining girders will be launched by the end of the month. Following this, attention will shift to the northbound arm, with a targeted deadline of May for the opening of both arms of the Coastal Road.
The bridge, spanning 850 meters in length, will utilize a combination of steel and concrete, with eight girders in total to bridge the gap. Special barges, sourced from Abu Dhabi, are being used for the construction, facilitating the installation of multiple small girders ranging from 44 to 60 meters in length.
A notable aspect of the bridge design is the incorporation of a ‘bow-string’ girder bridge, chosen after negotiations with the local fishing community regarding navigation safety. This innovative design utilises high-tension chords to hold the spans together, ensuring a wider navigation span for boats passing beneath.
The Coastal Road Project, a long-awaited infrastructure endeavour, is now nearing completion of its first phase, marking a significant milestone in Mumbai’s transportation landscape.
