Mumbai and its neighbouring regions are in the grip of another scorching heatwave, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a Yellow Alert. Temperatures soared to 38.1°C in Mumbai, while Thane recorded a blistering 40.8°C on Sunday. The IMD predicts temperatures in Mumbai to oscillate between 38 and 39°C until Tuesday.
Mumbai’s nighttime temperatures persist at 27°C
Despite the sun setting, Mumbai found no respite as nighttime temperatures remained around 27°C, adding to the discomfort. The IMD’s Santacruz station recorded a departure of four degrees from normal, while the Colaba coastal observatory reported a comparatively cooler 34.4°C.
Sunil Kamble, Director of IMD Mumbai, attributed this spike in temperatures to a convergence of factors including north easterly winds, wind discontinuity, and a high-pressure area over parts of Maharashtra. The situation prompted a heatwave alert until Monday for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, with Thane expected to endure temperatures around 40°C.
This recent bout of heat follows a record-breaking episode on April 16, when temperatures soared to 39.7°C, marking Mumbai’s hottest April day in over a decade. As the heatwave tightens its grip, residents are advised to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated.
