Amid a rise in the number of illegal structures in the vicinity of several heritage sites in Goa, the state government announced a plan to demarcate the heritage sites and structures to curb encroachment. Reportedly, the state Archeology Department will be tasked with carrying out the demarcation of the heritage sites and structures in the state.
A similar concern was raised after a 17th-century Old Goa Church complex, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, faced the threat of encroachment on its boundaries by real estate developers after the government incorporated the area under an urban planning authority.
The move is aimed at protecting the heritage properties and properties of national importance in the state. The state government will conduct the demarcation drive after conducting an on-site survey to identify properties that needed protection.
