Spanning 300 metres across the Sabarmati River, this pedestrian bridge is not just a marvel of modern design but also a tribute to one of India’s cherished leaders, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Inaugurated in August 2022, the bridge was envisioned as a part of the Sabarmati Riverfront project, aimed at revitalising the riverbanks.
Its structure is inspired by Ahmedabad’s famous kite festival, Uttarayan. The bridge’s triangular truss structure, reminiscent of kites soaring in the sky, pays homage to this vibrant tradition.
Colourful fabric panels overhead provide shade and create a lively atmosphere, making the bridge not just a functional structure, but a celebration of the city’s cultural spirit.

As you stroll across Atal Bridge, you’ll immediately notice its innovative design. This modern marvel elegantly connects the upper and lower promenades of the Sabarmati Riverfront, linking a tranquil flower garden on the western bank with an upcoming arts and culture centre on the eastern side.
Evenings on Atal Bridge are especially enchanting. As dusk falls, the bridge is bathed in soft LED lights, casting a warm, inviting glow over the river and creating a serene, almost magical atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to take in panoramic views of the city and capture some memorable photos.
