Curious? So were we. We spoke to Ashish Christian, a celebrated Gujarati singer, lyricist, and composer, who’s popular for this garba style. He took us on a fascinating journey of how this blend of tradition and faith has evolved into a vibrant festive phenomenon.
Lyrics related to stories from the Bible
For most Gujaratis, Garba means Navratri, with its dazzling costumes, swirling dances, and chants of devotion to deities. But Christian Garba takes this beloved art form in an entirely new direction. The taals and beats are the same, but the lyrics shift to stories from the Bible, celebrating the birth of Christ, his teachings and life.
Ashish explains, “Gujarati Christians have been part of this land for centuries, so it was only natural for us to blend our faith with local traditions. We kept the essence of Garba but gave it a spiritual makeover with Biblical narratives.” The result? A dance form that’s not just devotional but also delightfully unexpected—a true cultural crossover!
During Christmas, this garba style take centre stage across Gujarat and beyond. Church courtyards, community halls, and even sprawling grounds in cities like Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara, turn into dance arenas where people groove to the beats for hours.
And it doesn’t stop there! Thanks to CDs, cassettes, and now playlists on every streaming platform imaginable, Christian Garbas have gone global. Gujarati Christians living abroad proudly keep the tradition alive, proving that you can take the Garba out of Gujarat, but you can’t take Gujarat out of the Garba!
Now an integral part of Gujarati Christian community
The rise of Christian Garba can be credited to pioneers like C. Vanveer, a Gujarati Christian songwriter based in Mumbai. Decades ago, Vanveer noticed that young Christians didn’t have vibrant music to dance to during their festivities. So, he rolled up his sleeves and began writing lyrics inspired by Biblical stories, setting them to the infectious rhythm of Garba.
“The goal was simple,” Vanveer recalls. “We wanted music that made you want to dance non-stop for 30 minutes. And nothing does that better than Garba!”
Initially, there was some resistance. After all, Garba was seen as a primarily Hindu tradition. But over time, its joyous energy won over sceptics. Today, Christian Garba is a highlight at Christmas celebrations and even weddings. Ashish Christian adds, “Nine out of ten Christian weddings in Gujarat now include Garba nights!”
Christmas celebrations in Gujarati Christian communities are no quick affair. Garbas are played during the whole week of festivals, often in styles like Ek Taali, Be Taali, and Timli. The lyrics might differ, but the enthusiasm is universal.
From big cities like Rajkot and Nadiad to smaller towns like Songadh and Devgadh Baria, shamianas are set up, stages are decorated, and dancers dressed in their festive best sway to the music. It’s a spectacle that blends spirituality with unabashed joy.
