The opening night of Coldplay’s concert on the 18th of January at Navi Mumbai’s DY Patil Stadium attracted 75,000 fans but left behind 9,000 kilograms of waste! The garbage, equivalent to over 100 grams per person included plastic tiffin boxes, bottles, banned carry bags, and cardboard food containers.
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) swiftly launched a massive cleanup operation, deploying 150 personnel to manage waste segregation and disposal. The effort began at 10 PM and continued until 3 AM, with NMMC Commissioner Kailas Shinde personally supervising the operation. By the next morning, the venue and surrounding areas were restored to a clean state.
A comprehensive waste management strategy has been implemented for the concerts, featuring strategically placed bins for segregation. Plastic waste is being directed to recycling facilities, while organic waste is sent to Turbhe’s processing centre. Ten refuse vehicles have been conducting 182 collections throughout the event.
With the final concert in Mumbai scheduled for today, the 21st of January, NMMC’s commitment to zero-waste initiatives and adherence to Swachh Bharat Mission guidelines showcase Navi Mumbai’s dedication to sustainability and efficient urban waste management.
