Mumbai is set to inaugurate its first-ever land-based cable-stayed bridge at Reay Road, a six-lane structure enhancing both infrastructure and aesthetics. The bridge constructed at a cost of ₹266 crore rupees, spans 385 meters and features a unique central pylon system with stay cables erected on the central spine girder.
The bridge was initially set to open in November but faced minor delays. Now, with construction complete and only finishing touches remaining, it is expected to open soon.
Connecting key areas and improving mobility
The bridge, which began construction in February 2022, will connect the Byculla East area to Mahul Road and the Eastern Freeway, passing over the historic Reay Road station and the Harbour line. The project required significant coordination between civic bodies, leading to the relocation of a railway ticket counter, 130 chawls, and 15 sheds.
In addition to its functional benefits, the bridge will feature architectural LED lighting and a Bridge Health Monitoring System for enhanced safety. With most of the construction work now complete, only the final touches remain before its highly anticipated inauguration. Set to open soon, the bridge is expected to streamline traffic flow and reduce congestion. With its striking design and well-planned location, Mumbai’s second cable-stayed bridge is all set to redefine urban connectivity.
