Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has announced plans to acquire land for the northern extension of the Coastal Road, which will stretch from Bandra to Dahisar. On Wednesday, the BMC issued a notice to change the reservation status of 60 land plots along Mumbai’s coast, falling under the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), to facilitate the project.
Further, the civic body has invited public feedback on the proposed alignment, with citizens encouraged to submit suggestions within 30 days. Thereafter, a public hearing will follow.
Vision for the Coastal Road Project
BMC’s bridges department has proposed the Coastal Road Project, which will cover approximately 17.6 km from the Versova-Bandra sea link interchange to the Dahisar interchange. When combined with the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road connector, the total project length reaches 22 km.
The affected land parcels are situated in several areas, including Goregaon, Malad, Charkop, Borivali, Eksar, and Dahisar. Of the affected 705 acres, about 705 are owned by the state government, while the remainder is privately held.
The proposed alignment from GMLR connector to Dahisar will span 11.4 km, with widths ranging from 36.6 m to 53 m. This section will also include 3.5 km of connectors and interchanges, impacting wards P-North (Malad), R-South (Kandivali), R-Central (Borivali), and R-North (Dahisar).
Further, BMC intends to reflect these changes in the DP-2034 under Section 37(1) of the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, 1966.
