Kanpur Metro inaugurated its first underground metro section recently and on its very first day, the new route recorded 25,000 passengers. This was a five-fold increase, compared to the average daily footfall of 5,000. The updated corridor now connects Chunniganj with Kanpur Central, completing a major phase of Metro Corridor I (Kanpur Metro Orange Line). This underground link expands the previously elevated system and reaches critical parts of the city. Authorities expect passenger numbers to rise to 50,000 per day.

A new experience for commuters
On May 30, for many Kanpur residents, travelling via the underground metro was a first. From as early as 6 AM, passengers began queuing at stations, many simply to be part of the city’s historic leap forward. Selfies, admiration for the air-conditioned platforms, and relief from the oppressive heat defined the experience. The sleek design, cleanliness, and smooth operation of the underground stations left commuters impressed and eager to return.
With the extension to Kanpur Central, the Orange Line now spans 14 stations; nine elevated and five underground. The 5 new underground stations are Chunniganj, Naveen Market, Bada Chauraha, Nayaganj and Kanpur Central.
Extended timings on the cards
Moreover, with new stations added to the network, UPMRC is considering extending the last train departure from 10 to 10:30 PM. The proposal is under review and could be implemented soon. Metro officials confirm that this adjustment would align Kanpur’s schedule with that of the Lucknow Metro and provide essential last-mile connectivity for late-night travellers.
