Lucknow, the ‘Land of Nawabs’ and legendary kebabs, is now a step closer to global culinary recognition as India’s official nominee for UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network (UCCN) under the “Creative City of Gastronomy” category. Celebrated for its melt-in-the-mouth galawati kebabs, aromatic biryanis, and indulgent sweets like malai gilori and imarti, Lucknow’s food culture is a rich tapestry of tradition, flavour, and timeless technique.

The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has submitted a detailed dossier highlighting Lucknow’s rich and varied culinary landscape, from legendary Tunday Kebabs and slow-cooked nihari to beloved street eats like Bajpai ki Puri and motichoor laddoos. Heritage expert Abha Narain Lambah, who spearheaded the UNESCO nomination, described Lucknow’s cuisine as far more than mere sustenance, a sensory journey that weaves through the city’s rich historical and cultural tapestry.
If approved, Lucknow will become India’s second City of Gastronomy after Hyderabad, joining the ranks of international culinary destinations like Belem (Brazil), Alba (Italy), and Bergen (Norway). A UNESCO evaluation team is expected to visit soon, sampling everything from the vibrant street food of Chowk to the elegant offerings in Hazratganj.
Local Chef Ahad Arshad describes Lucknow’s culinary scene as unparalleled, ranging from the royal sophistication of dum pukht to the simple delight of khasta-kachori. With the final decision still awaited, the city is poised for global recognition, potentially drawing foodies from around the world eager to savour the richness of Awadhi cuisine.
