In a move to curb rising crimes against women, the Uttar Pradesh government has issued a new directive for public transport drivers. Those operating e-rickshaws, autos, taxis, and app-based services like Ola, Uber, and Rapido must now display their name, Aadhaar number, and mobile number clearly. The rule will roll out first in Lucknow and apply across all districts. Transport operators have 15 days to comply, and failure to comply will lead to action under the Motor Vehicles Act.
No more anonymous rides
The details must be clearly displayed inside or at the back of the vehicle, making it easy for passengers, especially women, to note them. This move comes after a letter from the State Women’s Commission on May 26, urging the Transport Department to act amid rising cases of harassment and crime against women in public transport.
RTO (Enforcement) Prabhat Pandey said the step is meant to offer women a greater sense of safety. By allowing passengers to photograph and share the driver’s details with family, the rule aims to make daily commutes safer and more reassuring for women.
