Lucknow’s medical aid has penetrated into the digital age by successfully blending state-of-the-art automation into clinical practice. The SGPGI conducted the first robotic kidney transplant in the state, leading the branch of minimally invasive surgery in Uttar Pradesh. Reportedly, this technique opens a new dimension for renal transplants seekers in Lucknow and across, especially for those who are overweight.

The future is now!

The first-of-its-kind robotic surgery in Lucknow was conducted under the supervision of Rajesh Ahalwat, an expert in minimally invasive renal procedures with the Head of Urology and Renal Transplant Department, Professor Aneesh Srivastava. The HOD has mentored teams doing renal transplants at various medical colleges, read reports.

The surgery in Lucknow was conducted on a 42-year-old female patient from Barabanki. She was diagnosed with end-stage renal disease by the Head of Nephrology Department, Professor Narayan Prasad. “She had been on maintenance haemodialysis since April 2019. Her mother agreed to donate a kidney to her. She underwent workup for ABO compatible renal transplant for immunological matching, after which the transplant surgery was planned,” Prasad said.

As per reports, the patient’s family was introduced to the robotic surgery option by Professor Aneesh Srivastava and the ball was set to roll once they agreed. “The patient is stable. The procedure has opened a window of opportunity for renal transplant seekers, especially those who are overweight,” he said.

Lucknow enters the league of medical excellence in India

State capital Lucknow has entered into the foray of medical excellence with this feat, in the league of the few centres in India doing such surgeries. SGPGI had procured a medical robot in 2019 and has successfully enabled 200 robotic surgeries in the last 2 years with its help.

“Robotic surgery means smaller incision; it makes patient management easier and shorter post-procedure care. It means shorter hospital stay and reduced chances of infections,” the Professor explained.
