Perturbed by the use of metallic and Chinese Manjha in the vicinity of metro lines, the UPMRC undertook an innovative campaign to promote an awareness drive against the same. Chinese manjha is commonly used in kite-flying in the city and is popular for its strength, however, this attribute has brought major inconvenience to the city’s mass rapid travel system. These strings have not only caused damage to metro property but have also disrupted the services multiple times.

On Wednesday, the Lucknow Metro Officials took to the road, extending from Alambhagh to Singaar Nagar, where people were handed over a rose along with a pamphlet and an appeal to not use Chinese manjha or metallic string near metro corridors. The people were made aware of the drawbacks and risks of using such strings, which may cause the kite-flyer to get electrocuted if the ‘manjha‘ (thread) has any metal element on it and comes in contact with OHE of the Lucknow metro which runs with a high current of 25,000-volt.
As per reports, entangling of these threads have also disrupted the smooth operations of metro services for about 500 times in the past 3 years and the troubles increase even more during the festivals like Makar-Sankranti or Jamghat in Lucknow, which are characterised by traditional kite flying matches.
The LMRC is working actively to implement public safety and convenience along with the prevention of loss to metro property. Besides conducting regular awareness drives about not flying kites near the metro corridor, the UPMRC has also urged the kite sellers to be aware of the same and to educate the buyers too.
