Lucknow’s revamped Gomti Nagar Railway Station, redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme and inaugurated in February 2024, appears to be navigating a prolonged transition phase. Although several train services have been shifted here from Charbagh Railway Station, the modernised, airport-style terminal is yet to function at its full planned capacity. Passenger movement has increased, but large sections of the upgraded facility remain only partially utilised.
The station’s commercial zone, proposed to house a shopping mall, air-conditioned waiting lounges and other commuter amenities, is still under construction.
Steady Footfall Amid Ongoing Transition

According to a senior railway official, the station’s average daily footfall is around 2000 passengers, with 22 trains making regular scheduled stops each day, plus an additional 10 to 12 trains commencing or terminating route travel every 24 hours. The demand from passengers shifts dramatically during peak summertime due to the increased passenger volumes. Therefore, during this time, the Indian Railways will provide special trains to accommodate the demand of the passengers, which may ply from this station.
Lucknow’s Model Railway Hub Awaits Full Activation

The Gomti Nagar Railway Station has been developed as a model transport hub, envisioned with airport-like passenger amenities and upgraded accessibility features. The station includes improved entry and exit points, expanded waiting areas, upgraded platforms, modern roofing, enhanced sanitation facilities, and new commuter-friendly additions such as escalators, elevators, improved signage systems, and free Wi-Fi to help passengers navigate the premises with ease.
A key feature that sets the station apart from conventional railway terminals is its proposed public-private business model. While Indian Railways will continue to manage core rail operations, commercial activities and station maintenance are expected to be overseen by a private operator. Retail spaces have already been created on the first and second floors, with designated units intended for individual businesses.
Further complementing the larger redevelopment plan, a new shopping mall is under construction adjacent to the station. The project will be connected through a dedicated pedestrian bridge, allowing seamless movement between the railway station and the commercial complex.
Gomti Nagar Station is Still Missing a Final Piece

In large measure, the core infrastructure at Gomti Nagar Railway Station is in place, but the station is yet to be fully commercially activated or transitioned to private facility management. The station is still awaiting a private operator to manage its non-core services after two rounds of bidding reportedly failed to attract a suitable agency.
Fresh bids for Integrated Station Facility Management (ISFM) services are currently open, with submissions scheduled to close on May 22, 2026, at 3:00 pm, followed by bid opening at 3:30 pm the same day. Until then, the station remains a partially utilised asset, operational in key areas but still short of its full planned potential.
