Ahmedabad witnessed a massive waste management operation after the Coldplay concert, which saw around 2.5 lakh attendees over two days at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The large-scale event generated 550 tonnes of waste across 150 venues and transport routes, putting the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) to the test.
492 workers, 50 teams, and 61 waste trips ensure stadium cleanliness
A total of 492 sanitation workers worked in two shifts over two days to ensure cleanliness. The operation was supervised by 24 senior sanitary staff members and included 50 litter-picking teams working round-the-clock. Additionally, 52 sanitation workers were exclusively deployed at the 13 parking venues near the stadium.
The AMC mobilized extensive resources for waste disposal, including 14 JCB machines, 27 trucks, and 12 sweeping machines. Water tankers and mist cannons were used to maintain cleanliness, while five compactors and 10 additional waste transportation vehicles ensured efficient waste disposal. In total, 61 trips were conducted across four shifts to clear the accumulated waste.
Sanitation measures at hotels, transport hubs, and public spaces
Beyond the concert venue, cleanliness operations extended to 78 top hotels accommodating international visitors, key transport hubs, and commercial areas. The AMC deployed sanitation teams at 14 bus stands, 4 railway stations, and 10 metro stations to handle the influx of visitors.
The Gujarat government lauded the success of the event, citing it as a testament to the state’s world-class infrastructure. The Coldplay concert showcased Ahmedabad’s capability to manage international events efficiently while reinforcing the need for sustainable waste management practices in future large-scale gatherings.
