Coronavirus cases surge past 49,235 in Goa; weddings in the state become a major contributor

With the onset of the wedding season in the country, a sudden spike in coronavirus cases has been observed in many Indian states, including Goa. Even the COVID situation couldn't stop the people from planning destination weddings, in which case Goa automatically becomes the most preferred location. And now, these weddings have been pinned as the largest contributor of the new coronavirus infections that are emerging in the state!

As per Goa Medical College and Hospital Dean, Dr Shivanand Bandekar, recently almost a hundred persons, all from one family, tested positive for the infection. The daily statistics of fresh cases fluctuate from 70 to 150 in Goa and weddings source the highest percentage of these numbers.

Growing at a rate of 0.2% in Goa, new infections rose to 104 on Friday, taking the count of confirmed cases to a total of 49, 235. The active ratio of the state stands at 2.4% in the state, taking the active caseload around 1,187 patients. According to daily tallies, Goa is generating positive trends of higher recoveries, lower new infections and negative active cases for three days in a row.

Goa's recovery rate has surged past the national average of 94.8%, clocking at 96.2%, yielding a total of 47, 345 cases since the outbreak of the virus. Since the past 9 days, Goa's daily recovery count has been over the sub-100 tally.

Besides this high recuperation rate, Goa has also managed to minimise its fatality count. For the last two days, the state has not reported even a single death due to viral infection. Since the outbreak of the virus, a total of 703 people have succumbed to the infection of COVID-19, which has taken the total case morbidity to 1.4%.
