In sync with South Western Railway’s plan of going carbon-neutral, the electrification work on the double-tracked line in the Goa section has gained momentum. According to a senior official of SWR, as many as 22 trains have been equipped with Electric engines in the financial year 2021-22. Under the ambit of this electrification project, the entire Hospet to Vasco route via Hubli and Tinaighat will soon be electrified. According to a spokesperson, the South West Zone of Railways aims to switch at least 10 more trains to electric engines in the next two months. Apart from this, routes with a single line under SWR will also be electrified.
Notably, the electrification work was initiated by SWR in 2016 where it covered 200 RKM in the first year. Whereas, the current financial year has seen the electrification of 232 RKM (Route Kilometre), completely electrifying a total of 40% of RKM of South Western Railways. Meanwhile, the zone plans to cover more than 200 RKM in the next two months.

Apart from technological advancement, this move is meant to promote sustainable development in the area, leaving no additional impact on the environment. Recently, a new 10.7 Km double line with a 25 KV electrified section from Devarapalle to Hindupur was commissioned in December 2021. The project was approved after the successful completion of a statutory inspection and speed trial.
Electrification of rail tracks under Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action), will not only enhance the speed and punctuality of trains but will also take forward the task to make the entire Indian Railways carbon-neutral by reducing the dependency on fossil fuels.
