In a bid to promote sustainable development in the city, Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has made the installation of rainwater harvesting systems in all residential, non-residential buildings and government structures mandatory. At least 1,500 sqft of the area will be required for setting up such a system. Notably, it’s essential for all existing and upcoming structures to be equipped with rainwater harvesting systems.

Reportedly, the new law came into effect on April 4 when the state government notified Indore Municipal Corporation (Rainwater Harvesting) Bylaws, 2022. According to the notification, existing buildings that meet the criterion will have the install rainwater harvesting measures, failing to do so will invite a penalty of ₹5,000.
According to an IMC commissioner, the bylaws carry special provisions that prevent any prosecution, lawsuit or litigation against the government agent authorised under the bylaws to take action in accordance with the directives. Exclusively designed for IMC, these rules ensure that rainwater harvesting measures are put in place by making it mandatory for builders to pay a returnable security deposit for rainwater harvesting system.

Reportedly, a harvesting pit of 4-metre diameter and 15-metre depth has been ordained for residential buildings built between 10,000 sqft and 25,000 sqft, whereas a harvesting pit of 6m diameter has been mandated for buildings above 25,000 sqft. People constructing buildings above 1,500 sqft must obtain permission from the civic body after paying a security deposit, which will be returned once the system is certified by IMC and found operational.
Notably, the owners or builders of all buildings will have to provide geotagged photographs and schematic details of the rainwater harvesting system as evidence to get the certification from IMC. Reportedly, IMC will carry out regular inspections of the rainwater harvesting system to check components including the water collection area/system, pipes installed for the downward flow of water from the roof, control valve and flash pipe, filter units and the storage tank.
Along with this in a bid to promote sustainable growth in the city, IMC has further planned to give a 10% rebate on consolidated taxes to a builder installing a certified rainwater harvesting system.
