In a move to promote a cleaner and greener environment, the Indian Institute of Management Indore is working on a remarkable initiative for waste management. As per reports, nearly 1000 kg of kitchen and dry waste is being processed at the institute daily. In addition to this, the administration at IIM Indore has also banned the use of single-use plastic inside the campus. Reportedly, the management plans to convert the educational centre into a zero-waste and a net-zero-energy campus.
Manure prepared from the waste being used across the campus
According to reports, the single-use items in the mess and college cafeteria have been replaced with wooden forks, spoons and paper plates. Further, the institute has got a systematic infrastructure for collecting, segregating and degrading the organic wastes from the households. After processing, the waste is transformed into manure, which is used across different parts of the institute, including the organic garden, fruit orchard and vegetable garden.
A list of measures operational at the institute for energy conservation
As per reports, the director of the institute informed that IIM Indore is taking a string of steps to reduce the usage of water and electricity. Further, he asserted that people residing on the campus use copper bottles instead of plastic bottles.
In addition to this, a number of spots on the campus have got new taps that are equipped with special faucets to minimise water consumption. The institute also has a well-structured rainwater harvesting system for saving and preserving water. Notably, IIM Indore also has solar panels which decrease its dependency on the supplied electricity and thereby fuel energy conservation.
