When you talk heritage, culture, royalty, tradition, forts, only one city comes to mind- the Pink City. For a long time, Jaipur has been nothing short of one of the best tourist destinations in North India and for good reason. The city packs in history at every corner and a story at every turn. UNESCO seems to have realized this and have tagged the entire walled city of Jaipur as a world heritage site.
The decision was taken by UNESCO at the latest conference that took place in Baku, Azerbaijan. Senior officials from the UNESCO had visited the walled city of Jaipur back in 2018, after which they decided to make it a heritage site owing to the major historical significance of Jaipur.
The walled city of Jaipur is especially culture rich and is nationally as well as internationally recognized as a major tourist hub. At the end of the day, there was no way that the UNESCO members could leave it out of the list.
The walled city itself is centuries old and was built in the year 1727. The fact that it stands tall even today is a major feat of the architectural marvel that it is. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to express his joy on the matter. “Jaipur is a city associated with culture and valour. Elegant and energetic, Jaipur’s hospitality draws people from all over. Glad that this city has been inscribed as a World Heritage Site by @UNESCO,” he tweeted.
The addition of the walled city of Jaipur to the UNESCO’s world heritage site comes as a feather in Jaipur’s cap. To date, 1,092 sites in 167 countries have been inscribed on the World Heritage List. Already, the city is a huge tourist destination for people of all ages and with the new tag of a world heritage site, the appeal of the city just goes up.
