To meet the long-term traffic demands of the city, the construction of Kanpur Metro with a 6-car train configuration which is similar to that of Lucknow and other cities is in progress. It is being said that by the year 2024, Kanpur will be home to an overall count of 39 metro trains. These trains will run between 30 stations located on two routes in the city and reportedly, the frequency of these metro trains would be around five minutes apart. So if a commuter misses boarding a metro at a particular station, she/he would not have to wait for more than five minutes at the same station.

In its first phase, the metro trains will operate between the 9 km stretch of IIT and Motijheel stations and each metro will have three coaches. The construction work is in full swing on this route. According to officials, the trial run of Kanpur Metro will be held in November next year and the commercial run, by December 2021 or January 2022.
Further to curb the pollution levels, two anti-smog guns have been deployed on the preparation yard between the casting yard and IIT to Motijheel, which keeps spraying water continuously in the air. Also to control the dust blowing at the construction site on the priority section route, a team of 20 people had been engaged in water-fogging with the help of eight tankers.
The civil construction work of the Kanpur Metro utility corridor is moving forward even during this pandemic and reportedly, the European Investment Bank (EIB) has even sanctioned a loan of Rs.5,551.99 Cr for this venture. This metro project is expected to lessen the traffic congestion on the roads and pollution levels too can be brought under control after its commencement.
