Farmers in and around Lucknow now have a new outlet for spoiled or surplus produce. Uttar Pradesh’s first fruit winery was inaugurated on Sunday in Malihabad, near Lucknow city, where damaged or unused mangoes and a variety of local fruits will be converted into alcoholic beverages such as wine. The facility aims to minimise agricultural waste and boost farmers’ incomes.
A ₹10 crore orchard-based project
The winery has been developed with an investment of ₹10 crore inside a 100-acre mango orchard in Lucknow’s Mal block by local horticulturist Madhavendra Deo Singh. During an interview, he emphasises that the wines are made without chemicals, added sugars, or ethanol. All ingredients are completely natural and sourced locally.
As per reports, four wines are ready for launch, crafted using mango, honey, mulberry, mint and other locally grown fruits. The wines will be sold in various sizes and priced between ₹300 and ₹1,200.
‘Made in UP’ Wines
Madhavendra Deo Singh established his company, Mbrosia Nature Living, two years ago and signed an MoU with the UP horticulture department during the last investors’ summit. Under the ‘Made in UP’ wine policy launched in March 2022, beverages made from local fruit are exempt from excise duty, making the venture farmer- and investor-friendly.
While products are now available for purchase at the winery, guided day tours will begin in two months. Visitors will be able to explore the winemaking process and sample freshly brewed fruit wine right where it’s made.
